Targeted Healing for Pain & Dysfunction

When something specific is wrong, a general massage isn't enough. Zen Mend is a clinical, methodical session built entirely around the area that needs attention — combining assessment, Eastern medicine, and focused bodywork to address pain, restricted movement, and soft tissue dysfunction at the source.

Choose Your Focus

Zen Mend is structured around time and focus area. A 60 or 90-minute session targets one primary area in depth. A 120-minute session allows us to work two areas — ideal when issues are interconnected or multiple regions need attention.

Single Focus
60-Minute Session

Concentrated work on one primary area of pain or dysfunction. Begins with full-body and local stretching to assess tissue quality and range of motion, then moves into targeted therapeutic work. Best for isolated issues or first-time clients exploring this service.

60 min · One Area$85
Extended Focus
90-Minute Session

More time means more depth. The extra 30 minutes allows for a fuller assessment phase, more thorough technique application, and a proper wind-down — all while staying laser-focused on a single primary area. Recommended for chronic or complex conditions.

90 min · One Area$115
Dual Focus
120-Minute Session

Our most comprehensive Zen Mend option. Two full areas addressed in one session — essential when pain patterns are interconnected (e.g., neck and shoulder, hip and low back). The full two hours allows for proper assessment, focused work, and adjunctive therapy on both regions.

Assessment First,
Then Treatment

Zen Mend isn't a massage that happens to work on a sore spot. It's a structured therapeutic process — beginning with evaluation, moving through layered technique, and finishing with tools that reduce inflammation and support recovery.

01
Stretch, Assess & Map

Every session opens with both full-body and localized stretching. This isn't just warming up the tissue — it's assessment. Range of motion, tissue texture, and pain referral patterns are identified here, so the treatment that follows is guided by what the body is actually doing, not just what the client reports.

02
Broad to Specific Technique

Broad effleurage and warming strokes initiate the bodywork, preparing deeper layers to receive focused intervention. From there, Tui Na, Shiatsu, positional release, and deep tissue methods are applied precisely — targeting the structures identified during assessment. Meridian channels, acupressure points, and common trigger points are incorporated throughout.

03
Adjunctive Finishing Tools

Optional IASTM (instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization) and ice globe therapy complete the session. IASTM breaks up fascial adhesions and promotes tissue remodeling; ice globes reduce inflammation, calm the nervous system, and dispel excess heat — leaving the area settled and ready to heal.

The Philosophy Behind
This Work

01
Allow Time for the Body to Respond

Tissue change doesn't happen instantly. Sustained, appropriate pressure held with patience — not force — invites the nervous system to release. We wait for the body to open rather than pushing through resistance.

02
Synchronized Breathing

Breath is the most direct tool for softening the nervous system. An exhale drops muscle tone, quiets guarding, and allows us to move deeper without discomfort. We cue breathing throughout as active technique, not background ritual.

03
Present Awareness in the Body

Injury often pulls awareness away from the affected area. Part of this work is helping you bring attention back — noticing sensation, tracking change, and staying connected to what's happening in real time. Presence accelerates healing.

04
Let Go of Expectation

Every body responds differently. Progress isn't always linear — some sessions create immediate relief, others do quiet work that surfaces over the following days. We meet the body where it is, without forcing an outcome.

05
Work Outside the Threshold of Pain

Therapeutic work should be intense at times, but never sharp or intolerable. Working just below the pain threshold keeps the nervous system open and the tissue receptive. When the body braces, the work stops working. Your feedback guides this throughout.

06
The Meridian Framework

The 12 primary meridians and 8 extraordinary meridians are referenced throughout the session. Even in a problem-focused context, addressing channel flow and key acupressure points creates systemic balance that supports local healing.

"The goal isn't to fix the body — it's to remove the obstacles so the body can fix itself."
— Awaken Zen Spa · Zen Mend Philosophy

A Multi-Modal
Approach

Zen Mend draws from both Eastern and Western therapeutic traditions. No single technique works for every issue — so we use the combination that fits what the tissue and nervous system need in that session.

Stretching & Assessment

Active and passive stretching opens the session — relaxing tissue, evaluating range of motion, and identifying the areas that most need focus. This shapes everything that follows.

Tui Na

Traditional Chinese therapeutic massage applied to specific channels and points. Uses rhythmic compression, rolling, and kneading to stimulate circulation, move Qi, and address musculoskeletal dysfunction.

Shiatsu

Finger and thumb pressure applied along meridian pathways. Shiatsu regulates energy flow and addresses dysfunction at both a structural and systemic level — effective for chronic patterns and stress-related tension.

Positional Release

The tissue is placed in a position of ease — shortening the muscle at the point of tension — held briefly until neurological release occurs. Effective for acute and pain-sensitive conditions where direct pressure isn't appropriate.

Deep Tissue

Slow, sustained pressure delivered through forearm, elbow, or thumb to reach deeper muscle layers and connective tissue. Applied only after the surface layers have been properly prepared — earning depth, not forcing it.

Acupressure & Trigger Point

Sustained pressure on specific meridian points and common trigger points releases holding patterns, reduces referred pain, and restores normal muscle function. A precise, targeted approach to pain relief.

IASTM (Optional)

Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization uses specialized tools to detect and break up fascial adhesions and scar tissue. Promotes fibroblast activity and tissue remodeling — particularly effective for chronic injuries and restricted fascia.

Ice Globe Therapy (Optional)

Chilled glass globes applied to the treated area at the close of the session. Reduces local inflammation, calms the nervous system, closes pores, and dispels excess heat — leaving the tissue settled and the body ready to integrate the work.

What Changes
After This Work

Zen Mend targets the underlying cause of pain and restriction — not just the symptom. The results are both immediate and cumulative.

Targeted Pain Relief

By addressing the specific muscles, trigger points, and meridian channels involved in your pain pattern, this session creates meaningful relief where it matters — not just surface-level comfort.

Restored Mobility & Range of Motion

Fascial restrictions, muscle guarding, and joint stiffness all limit how freely you move. Focused stretching and multi-modal technique restore functional range — in the session and over time with consistent care.

Reduced Inflammation & Heat

IASTM promotes healthy tissue remodeling; ice globe therapy actively reduces local inflammation and excess heat in the treated area. Together, they support faster, cleaner recovery.

Nervous System Regulation

Injury keeps the nervous system in a state of alert and guarding. Zen Mend's combination of breath work, positional release, and meridian-based techniques helps downregulate this response — so the body can genuinely heal rather than just brace.

Support for the Body's Natural Healing

By improving circulation, lymphatic flow, and Qi through the affected region, Zen Mend creates the conditions that allow the body to do what it already knows how to do — heal, rebuild, and restore.

Right for You
If…

Zen Mend is designed for clients with a specific issue to address. This is an advanced, focused session — most effective for those who are comfortable communicating with the therapist and have had some prior massage experience.

This Session Is Ideal For
  • Chronic pain or tension in a specific region — neck, shoulder, low back, hip, knee, etc.
  • Post-injury recovery where tissue is healing but restricted
  • Repetitive strain or overuse injuries from work, sport, or daily activity
  • Postural dysfunction creating pain or tightness
  • Clients who've tried general massage and need more focused, lasting work
  • Anyone dealing with scar tissue, adhesions, or limited range of motion
  • Subacute to chronic conditions — mild to moderate intensity
Experience & Expectations

Zen Mend involves extended, focused work on specific areas of pain and dysfunction. Some techniques — particularly deep tissue, trigger point, and IASTM — can be intense. This is most effective for clients who are comfortable communicating sensation and feedback during the session.

Progress is paced to the body's response. You may notice significant relief immediately, or the effects may build over 24–48 hours post-session. Both are normal and expected.

Please Note — Consult Your Provider If You Have:
  • Acute inflammation or active infection in the target area
  • Recent surgery (within 6 weeks) or open wounds
  • Diagnosed blood clots or DVT
  • Certain cancers or active systemic illness
  • Pregnancy (some techniques require modification)

A Path, Not a
Single Visit

Chronic issues rarely resolve in one session. Zen Mend is most effective as part of a progression — starting with more frequent visits while the condition is active, then transitioning to maintenance once relief has been achieved.

Phase One
Active or Acute Pain

When pain is present and limiting — whether from an injury, a flare-up, or a long-standing condition that's become symptomatic. The goal here is to reduce pain, restore movement, and begin addressing the underlying pattern. More frequent sessions allow the tissue to continue building on previous work.

Recommended: 1–2× per week
Phase Two
Subacute — Mild to Moderate

Pain has decreased but isn't fully resolved. Range of motion may still be limited. The tissue is healing but benefiting from continued support. Sessions at this stage focus on consolidating gains, restoring full function, and preventing regression. This is where most lasting change happens.

Recommended: 2–4× per month
Phase Three
Maintenance

The problem has resolved or is well-managed. Regular sessions at this stage maintain the gains you've made, prevent re-injury, and address the small accumulations of tension before they become problems again. Many clients continue Zen Mend as part of an ongoing wellness routine — alongside or alternating with other AZS services.

Recommended: Monthly or as needed
